Hi folks. I’m Jim Adler, the tough, smart lawyer. Thank you so much for joining us for another one of our frequently asked questions. Today, we will discuss traumatic brain injuries which are categorized as mild, moderate, and severe based on the effect of the injury on brain function.

Traumatic brain injuries, or TBI’s, can be a devastating result of an accident. They are typically caused by a sudden, violent blow or jolt to the head that disrupts normal function in the brain. Vehicular accidents are the leading cause of TBI’s and may cause a loss of consciousness. Other common causes include falls followed by sports-related injuries for kids. These accidents may leave victims with life-long disabilities that require ongoing medical care.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a mild traumatic brain injury may include symptoms such as headaches, nausea or vomiting, fatigue, problems with speech, mood changes, and memory loss.

A moderate to severe traumatic brain injury typically results in longer lasting symptoms and may include loss of consciousness for an extended period, concussions, seizures, learning difficulties, difficulty speaking or writing, behavioral changes such as loss of self-control, depression, and anxiety.

TBI’s are notoriously hard to diagnose and are sometimes overlooked by medical professionals. Symptoms are different than in other types of injuries. For example, a victim might experience speech difficulties, behavioral problems, or sensory issues rather than pain. In addition, the symptoms may not show up for months or sometimes longer.

Treatment options for those diagnosed with traumatic brain injury may include seeing a neurologist or neuropsychologist for diagnostic testing, physical and occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and collaborating with other professionals such as a social worker, rehab nurse, or vocational counselor.

It is crucial for someone who has suffered this type of injury to get proper medical treatment as soon as possible as it may affect their everyday lives far into the future. It is also crucial to talk with an experienced brain injury lawyer who has handled these complex cases successfully and has the resources and expertise to get the client the compensation and benefits they deserve.
