Hello, I’m Bill Adler and welcome to another one of our frequently asked questions. Today we’re talking about what a catastrophic injury is and how it can affect you.

Imagine an injury so serious that it forces dramatic changes in your life. You might not be able to work anymore, and you might even need help with things like getting dressed in the morning. You may not be able to be the same kind of parent or spouse you used to be, and you might have to give up activities you used to enjoy.

That’s what the law calls a catastrophic injury—an injury that prevents the victim from living the same life they did before. Often, catastrophic injuries create permanent disabilities affecting important body systems. Texas law doesn’t provide a list of injuries considered catastrophic, but the American Medical Association defines a catastrophic injury as a severe injury to the brain, spine, or spinal cord. As experienced Texas injury lawyers, we would add severe burns, disfigurement, paralysis, amputations, and severe chronic pain.

Catastrophic injuries usually require intense medical treatment, especially at first. As time goes on, victims may need multiple additional medical procedures, and some will need access to care for the rest of their lives. In addition, victims often find themselves dealing with new limitations on their activities, affecting everything from their careers to their ability to brush their teeth. They might need to hire caregivers or help with things around the house. And in addition to these physical challenges, victims may face emotional challenges related to their injuries.

Getting the right care for all these injuries costs a lot of money, which is why catastrophic injuries are so expensive. At Jim Adler & Associates, we’ve helped hundreds of victims recover the money they deserve after a catastrophic injury. That’s justice, because it lays the costs of the injury at the feet of the person who’s at fault. But it’s also an important way to make sure victims get the money they need to get better and move on after a catastrophic injury.

If you’ve suffered a catastrophic injury that was someone else’s fault, don’t wait to call Jim Adler & Associates. We hammer wrongdoers and insurance companies that won’t pay what they owe our clients. Our goal is always to get our clients the best possible compensation.
